Casey
I live in Eagle Mountain, Utah and feel so grateful to be able to serve Utah and Salt Lake Counties. I am the owner of Mountain Valley Lactation, and I am thrilled to contract with the Breezy Babies team. I am available for telehealth consults and will travel 45 minutes from Eagle Mountain to visit you in your home and help you with all your breastfeeding needs.
I am a Registered Dietitian as well as an IBCLC. I love helping mothers with their prenatal and postpartum nutrition and lactation needs and helping them learn about starting solid foods with their babies.
When I first started working as a dietitian, I knew that I wanted to work with moms and babies. They’re my favorite clients to work with! I started working as a WIC dietitian and needed to become a lactation educator in order to better help my WIC clients. I thought I knew a lot about breastfeeding, but I was blown away by how amazing the human body is in how it prepares early in pregnancy to be able to feed a baby. There was so much I didn’t know about breastfeeding, and it was fascinating to learn about. When I had my first baby, I thought my breastfeeding journey was going to be a breeze. I was, unfortunately, quickly humbled. I had such a difficult time breastfeeding my firstborn. Tongue tie, engorgement, oversupply, nipple damage, infection—and that was just the beginning for us. I had to see many providers to get through all of our struggles, but with help from experts, I was able to overcome the obstacles and breastfed him for 2.5 years and met my goal. The breastfeeding problems I experienced with my first son actually continued with my second son, and we also struggled with breastfeeding. Luckily, I was able to find the help I needed, and I breastfed him for 2.5 years as well. I am grateful for my lactation journey because it taught me how to persevere through the struggles. At times I was frustrated that I didn’t have this perfect breastfeeding experience, but I realized how these struggles have helped me be more empathetic and compassionate as an IBCLC. I learned that no matter what your breastfeeding journey may look like and no matter how hard it may be at times, it is still beautiful no matter where you are on the path to achieving your lactation goals.
I officially obtained my IBCLC this year! It’s been a dream of mine to receive this certification so that I can be an advocate for all lactating parents and help them achieve their breastfeeding goals. Whatever that may look like for each person, I am honored to be here helping mommas.
Hobbies: Sleep! I love sleeping, probably because I don’t get enough of it. I absolutely love hiking. Being in the mountains is my happy place and is so good for my soul. I grew up playing volleyball and get to coach at a nearby middle school which is so much fun. I am a big book worm. Reading novels and listening to audiobooks is something I do regularly (it makes doing chores way better!). I am a sucker for a good Regency romance. I have a big crazy family and grew up playing all kinds of board games. I regularly beat my husband and brothers at Catan in our weekly online games that we started during the pandemic.
What I bring to your lactation journey:
I know what it feels like to be stressed and hopeless about breastfeeding your baby. I want to be the advocate that you need to work through any issues you may be facing and help you find all the answers to your questions. I won’t give up on you. I will be there with you as long as you need my help and support.
I specialize in prenatal lactation education, providing evidence-based care, helping moms achieve their breastfeeding goals, assessing lactation barriers, and maternal, child and infant nutrition.
Education & Experience:
I graduated from BYU in 2012 with my degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. I knew that I wanted to help my community, and I knew I wanted to work with moms and their babies. WIC was the perfect place for me. I worked at Salt Lake County WIC for several years. I loved teaching families about nutrition, and I always looked forward to the times when I was able to work with breastfeeding moms. I taught weekly prenatal breastfeeding classes at WIC and loved being able to help new parents prepare for their breastfeeding journey. I obtained my lactation education through UCSD where I learned from fantastic IBCLCs across the country. During my schooling I was chosen for a lactation internship at Timpanogos Regional Hospital and loved being able to work with new moms and babies in the postpartum unit and NICU. Besides doing home visits, I also contract with Dry Creek Pediatrics to help their clients with breastfeeding after frenotomy procedures.
How I can support you:
Teaching prenatal lactation classes or individual prenatal lactation consults have always been some of my favorite ways to help families. Helping moms prepare for their first experiences feeding their babies is magical. I have helped moms with low milk supply, breast and nipple pain, oversupply, engorgement, mastitis, nipple damage, latching and positioning, tongue ties, pumping, going back to work, bottle feeding, supplementing, and weaning.
